Who is the Zodiac Killer: What Was In The Zodiac Letters?

The Zodiac Killer, a notorious serial killer who terrorized California during the late 1960s and early 1970s, left a chilling legacy of unsolved codes and taunting messages for law enforcement and the press.

For over five decades, one particular cipher known as the “340 Cipher” remained an enigma, defying attempts at decryption. In 2021, the FBI, together with a group of codebreakers, announced that they have cracked the infamous 340 cipher used by the infamous Zodiac Killer.

Who is the Zodiac Killer: Decoding the Zodiac Killer’s Ciphers

The Zodiac Killer’s ciphers were intricate substitution codes, presenting a complex puzzle for investigators.

The first cipher, received by newspapers, was deciphered within a week by Donald Gene and Bettye June Harden. The decoded message contained the killer’s unsettling thoughts about the thrill of murder and his warped beliefs.

However, as the killings continued, the Zodiac Killer’s ciphers grew more intricate, and one specific cipher containing 340 characters baffled codebreakers for years. Recently, a team led by David Oranchak, Sam Blake, and Jarl Van Eycke took on the challenge of cracking the notorious cipher.

Who is the Zodiac Killer: Cracking the 340 Cipher

The team utilized software to explore various transpositional reading directions for the cipher.

Eventually, they made a crucial discovery: the cipher was broken into three smaller blocks of text. By skillfully transposing the text and identifying key letter-to-symbol translations, the team unlocked the hidden message.

The decoded message revealed the killer’s chilling thoughts, denying fear of the gas chamber and hinting at his warped belief in an afterlife where he would have slaves at his disposal.

The message also referred to an incident where the killer phoned a TV show to seek help, claiming sickness and a desire to evade the gas chamber.

Who is the Zodiac Killer: FBI Verification and Ongoing Investigation

The team submitted their solution to the FBI, which subsequently confirmed the authenticity of the decryption.

However, the decoded message did not provide any actionable information to identify the killer, leaving law enforcement with more questions than answers.

The FBI emphasized that the Zodiac Killer case remains an ongoing investigation, and they are dedicated to seeking justice for the victims and their families.

The team behind the decryption expressed their disappointment at the cipher’s lack of critical information and considered it more of the killer’s attention-seeking tactics.

Who is the Zodiac Killer: Deciphering the Final Two Ciphers

Meanwhile, an engineer and amateur codebreaker, Fayçal Ziraoui, recently claimed to have cracked the killer’s final two ciphers, with one message potentially revealing his identity.

The Zodiac Killer’s ciphers initially stumped investigators, but over time, some messages were deciphered. However, two ciphers remained unsolved until late 2020, when codebreakers, including Ziraoui, took up the challenge.

Who is the Zodiac Killer: Z32 Cipher: A Clue to the Zodiac Killer’s Name

Using an encryption key discovered in December, Ziraoui attempted to decode the Z32 cipher, which hinted at the location of a bomb set by the killer.

By applying the Z340 cipher’s key, Ziraoui found sequences that resembled words related to geographical locations, such as “north” (north), “east,” and “west.”

This led to the possibility that the Z32 cipher indicated a location, with mentions of Mount Diablo in California. Additionally, Ziraoui speculated that the coded coordinates might relate to murder victim Donna Lass’s disappearance location.

Who is the Zodiac Killer: Z13 Cipher: Implications for the Zodiac Killer’s Identity

Ziraoui further applied the Z340 cipher to the Z13 cipher, seeking to reveal its meaning. By employing a Trifid alphabet cipher, he found that the coded characters seemingly translated to the letters “K A Y R.”

Interestingly, Lawrence “Kane” Kaye, a main suspect in the Zodiac Killer case, bore similarities to these initials. Kane had connections to the area where the murders occurred and was identified by multiple individuals as a potential suspect.

Who is the Zodiac Killer: Mixed Reactions and Ongoing Investigation

While some experts commend Ziraoui’s methods and believe the FBI should investigate further, others question the code’s decipherability due to its brevity.

Ziraoui has forwarded his findings to the FBI for scrutiny, and the agency recently confirmed the cracking of the Z340 cipher.

The Zodiac Killer’s true identity and the significance of the decrypted messages remain subjects of intense speculation and investigation.

As the mystery surrounding the Zodiac Killer persists, codebreakers, law enforcement, and researchers continue to unravel the cryptic messages left by one of history’s most notorious serial killers.

Who is the Zodiac Killer: Was the Zodiac Killer Already Identified?

The killer’s identity remained shrouded in mystery, leaving victims’ families and law enforcement desperate for answers.

Recently, there have been intriguing developments suggesting a potential breakthrough in the case. The FBI revealed that they believe they have discovered the identity of the Zodiac Killer, pointing to Air Force veteran Gary Francis Poste as their prime suspect.

Thomas Colbert, a prominent journalist, and his organization, Case Breakers, made this bold claim, supported by an alleged FBI whistleblower.

Who is the Zodiac Killer: How the Alleged Killer Was Traced

According to Case Breakers’ statement, Poste was secretly listed as a Zodiac “suspect” in FBI databases since 2016, and a partial DNA sample connecting him to the crimes was reportedly secured in a federal lab.

Unfortunately, Poste passed away in 2018 at the age of 80, leaving authorities unable to apprehend and interrogate him. However, the circumstantial evidence implicating him appears significant.

Poste’s description aligns with the killer’s features, including distinct forehead scars, and the partial DNA sample provides a compelling link to the crime scenes.

Who is the Zodiac Killer: Obstacles in the Investigation

Case Breakers argued that the involvement of someone within law enforcement in hiding evidence or evading proper procedures hampers their efforts and those of countless families seeking closure. They underscored the need for transparency and cooperation in pursuing justice.

The Zodiac Killer captivated the public and media alike through his sinister acts and a penchant for taunting letters, cards, and puzzles sent to journalists and police after each murder.

The killer’s cryptic puzzles, intended to be solved by the public, unveiled disturbing messages that amplified the fear and fascination surrounding the case.

Who is the Zodiac Killer: A Movie Based on The Zodiac Killer

Notably, the Zodiac Killer’s story became the basis for the 2007 movie “Zodiac,” featuring acclaimed actors Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr., reigniting public interest in the unsolved case.

Who is the Zodiac Killer: Remained Unsolved

Thomas Colbert asserts that the DNA evidence is an unequivocal match, with six individuals reportedly confessing to Poste’s involvement as the Zodiac Killer, three of whom are on court affidavits.

Despite the claims made by Case Breakers, the FBI has not officially corroborated their findings.

They maintain that the case remains open and unsolved, leaving the true identity of the Zodiac Killer a lingering mystery.

Who is the Zodiac Killer: Zodiac Killer Suspect List

There are several suspects linked to the Zodiac Killer, although not ultimately proven to be the said killer. They are the following:

Gary Poste

The Case Breakers believe Gary Poste was the killer. Poste, who died in 2018, is considered a prime suspect due to scars on his forehead that match the Zodiac’s sketch and connections found in the Zodiac’s ciphers. The Case Breakers also link him to a sixth murder not previously attributed to the Zodiac.

Lawrence Kane

Lawrence Kane was pointed out by a woman claiming abduction by the Zodiac and by a police officer who encountered someone resembling the killer. No definitive evidence linked him to the crimes.

Arthur Leigh Allen

Arthur Leigh Allen, an alleged pedophile with a dishonorable discharge from the US Navy and a history of sexual misconduct allegations, emerged as a compelling suspect. Although seen near a murder scene and using the name Zodiac, no evidence directly linked him to the crimes.

Ross Sullivan

Ross Sullivan, a library assistant, came under suspicion due to his resemblance to Zodiac sketches and his disappearance after a murder. He was later hospitalized for mental health issues and passed away in 1977.

Richard Marshall

Accused by police informants of hinting at being the Zodiac, Richard Marshall lived in proximity to two murder scenes. However, his fingerprints did not match those collected from the crime scenes or letters.

Richard Gaikowski

Newspaper editor Richard Gaikowski was previously considered a possible suspect. His association with a counterculture newspaper and a dispatcher’s claim that his voice matched the killer’s raised suspicion, but the San Francisco Police Department ruled him out.

Louis Joseph Myers

Louis Joseph Myers reportedly confessed to a friend that he was the Zodiac before his death. However, the police did not take the claims seriously, and his absence during the period of no Zodiac letters weakens the connection.

Joseph Bevilacqua

A journalistic inquiry named Joseph Bevilacqua as a suspect, but his alleged partial admission to the crimes was later denied him, and he threatened legal action against the inquiry’s author.
