All the Weapons During the Vikings Era

As talented ironmongers, the Vikings came up with an extremely effective weapon. There are things to keep in mind when you discover the weapons and armor of Vikings. First, adult male Vikings were always armed, to the extent they hung their weapons by their bed at night – within easy reach.

It was known that in an honor-based society like the Vikings, men always stood ready to defend their name and honor. Feuds and fights were a fact of life during the Viking times.

Are you curious about the top weapons during the Vikings era?

In this video, you will learn the weapons used by the Vikings and understand why people feared and respected them for their armor and skill.

Weapons During the Vikings Era: Viking Axe

Most Vikings rode waves and jumped into battle carrying a weapon. They are known for this, as they carry a weapon at all times, and this was usually an axe as this is their weapon of choice.

The axe comes with a cutting edge that ranges from 3 – 18 inches in length, held in their waste with the belt. Their axes have long handles, depending on the owner’s wealth and use, as it gave them an advantage of longer reach in any battle.

Cool Facts about the Roman Civilization

Viking Spear

A spear is perhaps one of the popular weapons that the Vikings used. In fact, this weapon fits both roles for both ranged and close combat. Reaching between 3 to 10 feet in length, the spear is used for thrusting and throwing.

Spear weapons come in various designs, shapes, and lengths. From thin to long to spearheads that come with a wing shape near the shaft. It’s only taking the least amount of iron to make.

In fact, some spears were designed to be thrown at great lengths, while others have a close impact. These weapons were designed to be thrown at greater lengths. Others were sturdier, making them very ideal for close combat.

Viking Sword

Though Vikings are commonly associated with an axe, they were also people born in warfare, so it’s no longer a surprise that they will not limit themselves to only one choice of weapon.

Did you know that swords are their most expensive possession?

Yes, you heard it right, as it was a high expense of iron at the time. In fact, iron was only limited during the Vikings’ era.

Swords are usually reserved for military leaders and possessed by wealthy elites in the Viking society and are usually called The Ulfberht.

The swords were around 35 inches in length, double-edged and pattern-welded. Often held and decorated in scabbards, the Viking Sword was carried over their shoulder and reached by their right hand.

Bow and Arrow

The Vikings usually used bows and arrows for hunting. But since they are known to be skilled and usually close-quarter combatants, they also used these weapons for fighting.

They quickly discovered its effectiveness in raids, where archers released arrows to kill their enemies as possible, right before the close contact fighting. There they become skilled at shooting an average of 12 arrows per minute. Imagine that?

In fact, the arrows were so strong as they often penetrated the shields of their enemies. Because of their shooting skills, the Viking warriors usually unleash a barrage of arrows from the boats before making landfall and appealing to the opponents face-to-face.

Seax

Seax was also known as the Viking knife, but it had higher quality than an ordinary knife. While the Vikings, even slaves, carried knives with them, they knew that the seax was a larger and deadlier version, more like a knife used for fighting.

Elites and the wealthy usually own it. It’s the last form of weaponry that the Vikings equipped in their utility belts. It looks like a curved knife for practical and everyday use, especially self-defense.

Like any other weapon during the Vikings era, the seax came in various qualities and sizes, and the blades were never far from reaching the Viking age. Even slaves were permitted to carry this weapon.

Viking Helmet

Not all Vikings wore helmets. However, if they could wear it, they would not hesitate as the Viking helmet protects lives in any close-quarter combat.

This weapon was simple and often had that bowl shape design with a metal nose guard that protruded from the center.

And contrary to popular belief, there was little evidence suggesting that Viking helmets come with horns. Unfortunately, horns didn’t give that much protection and were just another thing for enemies to grab during combat.

Viking Armor

Because of their reputation, Vikings were feared throughout the lands for the chaos they caused across the coastline during the Viking age. They were respected warriors that are known for their sly and cruel tactics.

However, the Vikings were no fools, as they knew that to survive their way of life, they should protect themselves with shields, helmets, weapons, and body armor.

The Viking armor, for instance, was usually crafted out of thick padded leather. It’s like a suit that will give them protection from edged weapons, and they have it worn into any battle.

Their favorite form of armor at the time was the Chainmail. In fact, it was reserved for wealthy people, as iron was in demand and expensive.

Wrapping Up

Although a lot of stories have been passed down through the ages, only a few weapons during the Vikings’ era are still discovered. And if there are, the weapons must have been broken into pieces.

The Vikings were useful and versatile warriors known to be more capable of picking up any form of weaponry and using it when needed. Know that they were more than just ruthless warriors, as many would describe them. They were also seen as skilled craftsmen who could produce armaments of stunning works of art.
