Because of its architecture, art, culture and history, Rome would be an all-in-one package that makes it one of the most popular cities in the world.

Do you want to know more about Romans? Perhaps you are curious about Roman Civilization. Well, you’re probably in the right place!

In this video, let us go back in time and discover cool facts about Roman Civilization. So without further ado, let’s get started.

Romans Used to Bath Together

Did you know that they would go to communal baths to keep the Romans clean? During the Roman Civilization, big baths were where everyone would get together.

One of the famous baths that Romans used before still exists today, and it’s in Britain – when it was still under the Roman Civilization.

It is in the Bath! Bath was called Bath because they have Roman Baths there.

Gladiator Fights as Entertainment

If we have computers and basketball these days to get away with boredom, the Roman civilizations have gladiator fights.

Gladiator fights are their most famous form of entertainment. It’s where they put fighters in a ring, and they will fight to the death!

Just imagine the huge football stadiums today. It’s what happened during the Roman Civilization.

What’s more interesting is that gladiator fights were the most popular back in the day.

Invaded All Lands in the World

You probably heard people saying ‘The Roman Empire’ before. They never had an empire because they didn’t happen to stay in Rome.

The Romans went across the world and invaded many countries to make them all part of the empire. Even Britain was invaded, which is why they have much Roman stuff in the United Kingdom today.

In fact, the Roman Empire covered the land in most parts of Britain and the Mediterranean Sea.

Cats are Free to Roam in Rome

Do you like cats?

Did you know that cats in Italy are very much protected and loved? The Italians love the cats so much that they even have laws to protect them.

The cats can roam freely wherever they want, even in Rome’s historic and famous landmarks. They could live wherever they wanted and must be fed. They can’t be relocated.

And if anyone is caught harming the cats in Rome, they shall be charged with a crime. The local Italian authorities are responsible for neutering street cat colonies.

Eyes Were Bigger than Stomachs

Surely, you know how delicious Italian foods are. But with all that eating, did you know that in ancient Rome, it was normal for most citizens to eat between their meals so that they could continue eating more?

This Roman practice has been normalized between courses. It was common for feasters to eat and leave the table to get rid of what they just ate. What’s more interesting is that they would come back for more!

And for all we know, modern people might be medically concerned about someone who vomits during meals, feasts and Thanksgiving.

Roman Breathalyzer

While it’s a practice today that we kiss our partners before leaving, the Roman spouses used to kiss their wives on their mouths at the end of the day.

But unlike us, when we kiss our partners to show unconditional love, the spouse would kiss them to check their partner’s breath and see if they were sitting around drinking all day.

Flamingos Tongues as Popular Roman Delicacy

Part of the Roman Civilization and practices were flamingo tongues that were considered as their status of class and wealth.

You will not wonder why the upper-class Romans would enjoy themselves at feasts and banquets when Flamingo tongues are served. It’s a delicacy highly enjoyed by Romans and was the highlight of fancy dinners.

First Ever Mall in Rome

Just imagine a mall built during the Roman Civilization. The Trajan’s Market is the first ever mall in Rome and was built between 100 and 110 A.D.

It was Roman Emperor Trajan who built this shopping mall. It has multiple levels and more than 150 outlets selling everything from clothes to food.

And what’s cool is that Trajan’s Mall was believed to be the first-ever shopping mall in history. It has an archaeological complex that comes with the Museum of Imperial Forums.

The Use of Urines

In ancient Rome, there were public urinals where men could urinate. However, did you know that Romans used to use their urine in washing their clothes and in brushing their teeth?

This may seem gross to hear, but it’s true! They used to purchase bottles of Portuguese urine and use it as their rinse. That’s why the importation of bottled urine turned out to be very popular. Even emperor Nero stretched the trade.

They believe that the ammonia in the urine could disinfect the mouths and whitens the teeth. With that, urine continued a famous mouthwash component until the eighteenth century. Yikes!

Hair Coloring was Popular

Today, whenever we like a new hairstyle, we can dye it to whatever color we like. But back in the day, during the Roman Civilization, hair dyeing was very popular among Roman women.

The famous colors were red and blonde, of which they used goat fat and beech wood ashes. The blonde was very popular because of Gauls and German.

Prostitutes should have their hair-colored blonde to distinguish themselves from the ordinary Romans. Those who dye their hair red are a symbol of rank and status.

Coins of the Trevi Fountain

About 3,000 Euros were collected from the Trevi Fountain’s bottom every night. As in every single night!

What’s so good and touching is that the money collected is being donated to charities like Caritas. They then used the money to help those in need in Rome.
