Invented in the 1890s

Did you know that motion pictures date back in the 1890s, just when the first ever moving cameras were invented?

The Roundhay Garden Scene, the first ever moving picture, was an 1880s product. The French inventor, Louis Le Prince recorded his family dancing around the circle in its gigantic 2-second clip.

Though this may seem insignificant these days, it is an innovation that led to commercialized motion pictures and cameras.

And right before the development of scenes in Hollywood, movies were slightly uninteresting. They started short and included just a single part that was just a minute long.

First Narrative Film

The film in 1903, The Great Train Robbery, though it was not the first ever film made, was the first ever film that told a story and was considered the first narrative fiction film.

It’s about 12 minutes long and under the production of Thomas Edison’s studio, the Edison Studios. This 12 minutes narrative film took place in New Jersey.

Leonardo DiCaprio did not Draw in “Titanic.”

James Cameron, the director of the all-time award-winning movie, “Titanic,” stood in as a strong hand during the scene where Leonardo drew the character of Kate Winslet, Rose.

As a talented illustrator, James Cameron was the one who drew Kate Winslet!

The issue when the scene was shot was that men did not write with the same hand. That is why, in post-production, the editor had to have mirror image shot.

First Feature Length Film in 1906

Did you know that The Story of the Kelly Gang, an Australian film, was the first-ever feature-length film in history?

Yes, you heard that right. And you can actually see the box office, cast, and even the budget details on IMDB. The film took more than an hour long, and the length of the reel was about four thousand feet.

For you to put that in your viewpoint, the small  five inch reel of the film could hold up to two hundred feet ft. The six-inch holds about three hundred ft and the seven-inch-four hundred ft.

However, it still depends on the reel size that the movie would be housed in. That’s at least about ten reels of a seven-inch film and mostly 20 reels of a 5-inch film. Can you imagine that?

Sad to say, this film seems lost forever. However, a few parts of the film’s story raised in 1975. This helped preserve the history-making of movies.

Film Industry Started in New Jersey

So much for facts about Filmmaking, but it was in New Jersey when the film industry started.

Contrary to popular belief, the American film industry did not start in California. It was actually on the opposite coast.

Many studios started in the towns of New Jersey at the start of the 20th century. This includes Paramount, Fox, and Universal. People from New Jersey must be proud.

Pulp Fiction – filmed in reverse

No one likes John Travolta, who pulled the needle out of Uma Thurman’s chest when she overdosed in the “Pulp Fiction” film.

The actual shot was taken in reverse, which made it seem like the needle made contact with the skin of Thurman. This made the shot safer since it reduced the risks of Travolta puncturing his co-star.

Avengers Endgame – Highest Grossing Film

Just recently, Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” is, by far, the highest-grossing film of all time. It made approximately $2.8 billion, the 4th film in the series Avengers.

This movie broke international and domestic records as it had the largest opening weekend ever. Thanks to Stan Lee, his comic superheroes made it to the big screen!

First Drive-In Theatre

Richard Hollingshead opened the drive-in theatre in Camden, New Jersey, on the 6th of July 1933. Yes, New Jersey again.

People have watched the British comedy film “Wives Beware” after they paid 25 cents per car. And even though the popularity of the drive-in has waxed and waned through decades, 321 theatres remained open in the US as of 2020.

Pirates of the Caribbean – The Most Expensive Film Ever

If you have been watching the Amber Heard and Johnny Depp Defamation trial in 2022, you must know that the latter is the star of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

With so many issues and allegations put upon him during the trial, you wouldn’t believe how this guy makes money.

In fact, according to sources, one of his films in 2011, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” was the most expensive film ever as of 2020. It cost over $300 million to make this movie, with a budget of $378.5 million.

Movie Theatres Today Use Digital Light Processing

Now, let’s focus on the NOW.

These days, movie theatres are using digital video projectors. It’s a kind of technology called DLP, which means Digital Light Processing.

And because modern films are projected in a digital manner, the movie studio will no longer ship huge film reels to theatres. Many could save money and time.

Today, they just send out videos via satellite, videos, or even hard drives. This is perhaps another massive progression in the filmmaking industry.

Hope these facts about filmmaking have helped you learn more about the industry.
