The formation of the U.N. happened in 1945. It was during the end of WWII when many countries joined together to focus on peace, protecting human rights and developing the country.

While people around the world read the news about U.N., the group is also active worldwide, which heads into crises in helping the world’s vulnerable people.

The formation of the U.N. has become a forum for countries to solve issues and negotiate in a regulated environment.

Formation of the UN

Even though it was founded in 1945, the formation of the U.N. started much earlier. During the war, the then-US President, Franklin Roosevelt, mentioned the “United Nations”.

It was mentioned in the declaration for the first time by the U.N. in January of 1942. It’s about the alliance of the 26 countries committed to defending the Atlantic Charter.

The 1941 document was signed and proposed onboard the HMS Prince of Wales in the Atlantic by Franklin Roosevelt with the U.K.’s Prime Minister – Winston Churchill.

This is to establish a series of principles for international collaboration to maintain security and peace.

At least 51 countries participated and signed the U.N. charter when World War II was over. It’s an international agreement that founded the organization and defined the groundwork of the international constitution.

The act was also celebrated in San Francisco, in the Veterans Building at the War Memorial Opera House. This was currently known as Herbst Theatre.

1. It has almost 200 Member States

Currently, there are about 196 member states in the U.N. These are all recognized by the U.N. as members of an international organization.

Only four countries are not members of the U.N. – Kosovo, Taiwan, Palestine, and Vatican City. Yes, these countries received an invitation to be part of the U.N., but they have yet to accept it.

2. Formation of the UN Headquarters

Did you know that the main headquarters of the United Nations is at First Avenue in New York? Even if the organization desires to develop an independent city globally, it was decided that there should be a vertical complex.

Also, the U.N. has three regional headquarters in Switzerland, Austria, and Kenya. These headquarters assist in representing the interests of the organization, as well as facilitate diplomatic activities.

3. About the Longest Speech

Are you aware that the longest speech in the United Nation’s history was in January 1957? An Indian representative V.K. Krishna Menon defended the position of India on Kashmir. And can you imagine that he gave a speech for five hours!

He was not even satisfied after five hours, as he continued the next day’s session for about three more hours. That’s why it was known as the longest speech in history.

4. Programs and Branches Received Nobel Peace Prize

For the last 70 years, the U.N. has been awarded 11 Nobel Peace Prizes to different programs, agencies, and initiatives. Alfred Nobel’s last will inspired the prize in 1895.

On his death, Nobel left most of his fortune to those who came up with advancements to have better humanity in chemistry, physics, medicine, physiology, peace, and literature.

5. Supply Vaccines Worldwide

Yes, you heard that right. The United Nations supplies vaccines around the world. Just recently, the U.N. partnered with Gavi, which led to having 5.5 billion vaccine doses for COVID-19.

Thankfully, these vaccines have helped us during the pandemic. These vaccines are being administered worldwide.

6. It has 6 Official Languages

Did you know that the United Nations have six official languages for meetings and distributing documentation?

In 1946, the languages were English, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, Spanish, and French. In fact, during meetings, the representatives and delegates utilize one of the languages to give a written interpretation.

Each language is recognized on a specific year’s day, celebrating multilingualism and cultural diversity.

7. Prioritizes Global Issues

Peacekeeping and conflict resolution are always the U.N.’s main goals of the U.N. However, and the organization also has other branches of foreign assistance.

Through the specialized programs, the U.N. has also addressed issues globally, such as climate change, decolonization, ending world poverty, international law, and children’s rights. The website also outlines fast facts to engage readers about different topics.

8. Official Emblem Still Hasn’t Changed

You see that the United Nations symbol and flag are white and blue. The design team created the logo in 1945 and officially adopted the organization in 1946.

9. Recorded the Human Rights Definition

During the U.N. General Assembly in 1948, the first ever Universal Definition of Human Rights was. The representatives drafted it from different cultural and legal backgrounds to make it more comprehensive.

It also sets out the fundamental human rights that must be protected, like condemning torture, slavery, and imprisonment without prejudice and trial. It was translated into over 500 languages.

10. The First Ever Woman In Charge  

Louise Frechette, a Canadian Diplomat, was the first woman in charge and U.N. Deputy Secretary-General in 1999. She was chosen to be in a position by Kofi Annan, and they became the first every woman to be in a position of high responsibility in the organization.
