Countries like Israel are just the few that require women to perform military service. They have the Israel Defense Forces, which women in Israel army have served since its establishment.

While countries like Israel are used to having women working in the army, you’re probably amazed or perhaps curious about how women in the Israel army work and live, especially if you belong to a country that does not require women to work in the army.

In this video, let us go deeper and understand the experiences of women in Israel who work in the army. So, without further ado, let’s get started.

Before we get started, let us understand why women in Israel must serve in the army.

Due to the establishment of the Israel Defense Forces and the dismantling of underground militias in 1948, the government has decided to mandate women into the army.

Perhaps you were shocked about the law of Israel to establish a mandatory service to women. But know that it’s an extraordinary measure made by the Israel government due to a shortage of military personnel.

It’s Ben Gurion’s concept about the “people’s army,” which he had tried to instil all the time.

For years, the discussion about military service as the concept of gender equality became very relevant. With that, many roles have been available for women to serve the IDF.

And since these considerations vary from one’s point of view and the needs of the army, it’s clear that the debate about women’s military service should be of high priority to the gender consideration principle.

And while it’s confusing on your part about women being drafted since the IDF is the people’s army, know that they should apply the principle of equality in all parts of society. These principles are:

Women’s Conscription is an Obvious Matter

There was actually research conducted in 1949 and a poll that asked the public about equal rights for women. Almost 92% were in favour, yet the opinions on whether women should be drafted were divided.

But it was believed that the state should demand as much from women as men. Of course, they should be granted equal rights.

Expand the Army Service of Women

Do you agree that women were always viewed to belong on the home front? And men, on the other hand, belong to the front lines and are sent to war.

At the time, women were excluded from having a part in warfare. But after the war, the army adopted another policy about the military role of women in the army because there was a need to build up the troops.

Women were trained for roles. These roles were based on the view that the drafting of women would free them from being at home. It enables them to participate in combat.

What are the Roles of the Women’s Army in Israel?

Israel is one of the countries with mandatory services for women. Know the positions and roles available.

Combat Positions

Different combat position roles are available for women who join the army. These are:

Search and Rescue

Those who belong to the search and rescue role are the ones who protect civilians in every operation, like natural disasters or wars. In the time of peace, the search and rescue unit also guards the borders of Israel, in addition to their responsibilities.

Infantry Corps

Like the search and rescue unit, Infantry units also guard and defend the borders of Israel. Women’s armies also conduct operations when needed.

And if you happen to see an army with K-9 dogs, they belong to the Infantry unit. They are also trained to handle and work with K-9 dogs, like the extraction of terrorists from fortified buildings.

Intelligence Corps

Reconnaissance and field intelligence units are the ones who gather information behind or close to enemy lines. It’s where most women in Israel army were usually assigned to.

Artillery Corps

This unit also defends the borders of Israel, as well as conducting operations when needed. This unit also includes elite missile and drone forces that women’s armies handle.

Paramilitary Police Force

Armies assigned to this unit usually have their training base outside Jerusalem. However, this police unit serves only within Israel, Jerusalem and West Bank.

It’s also amazing how women in Israel army deal with law enforcement, counter-terrorism, and controlling riots.

Non-Combat Positions

Women in Israel Army may also have other roles other than combat positions. The non-combat positions are usually filled with women. But take note that these positions may be critical, as they focus on guiding, training, and assisting combat soldiers. Check out the categories that belong to Non-Combat Positions.

Mashakit

This unit actually comes with a non-commissioned officer. However, the common positions are Hinuch, Aliyah, Mashakit Tash, Hod, and Shalishut. These jobs are actually very important. That’s why a Mashakit soldier should be on every base in Israel. She should be working with other soldiers and assisting in her specialty.

Madricha

There are actually a lot of madrichot types that would teach the soldiers to excel in their subjects. The subjects may vary from reading and analysing the map to learning how to operate machinery, weapons, tanks, and other equipment.

Other common positions include Tank, Madrichot Chir, totchanim, and many more. There’s also a sports instructor that is called Madagit. It’s her job to assist the squads, platoons, and other soldiers in maintaining physical training.
