So, if you’re planning to visit the Amazon forest and river one day, you must be aware of these dangerous animals.

Learn and Understand the 10 Most Dangerous Amazon River Animals

1. Green Anaconda

Do you find it frightening to hear about snakes? What about the Anaconda? The green anaconda is another snake specie that grows in the Amazon river.

It could grow up to nine meters long and weighs about 500 pounds. And did you know that anacondas are the largest snakes in the Amazon forest? They usually thrive in river streams, swamps, and marshes.

That’s why you must be careful when visiting the Amazon forest, especially in the river. Green anaconda’s life is spent mostly in the water. They breathe using the nostrils found on their head.

2. Red Bellied Piranhas

Ah, yes, piranhas! If you’ve watched the movie “Piranhas”, you already know how dangerous piranhas are. They are the most feared and dangerous predators of the Amazon river.

Apart from its image, the razor-sharp teeth and powerful jaws of the red-bellied piranhas prove they are dangerous. But contrary to popular belief, piranhas only feed on insects, fishes, crustaceans, molluscs, seeds, and algae.

Though they are not that aggressive to humans, you still need to be careful because, during dry seasons, when food is scarce, they could attack you.

3. Amazonian Giant Centipede

The usual centipede you see at home is nothing compared to the Amazonian Giant Centipede. It’s a creature that has become a famous dangerous animal in the Amazon River.

It’s a giant centipede with yellow legs. It is probably the largest centipede and could grow up to thirty cm long.

You should be aware that it’s a centipede that consumes a very wide array of animals. Anyone should be very careful when visiting the Amazon forest as the Amazonian centipedes deliver venom to a victim before the venom kills.

4. Black Caiman

This is perhaps the largest alligator and a massive predator that grows in lakes, shallow rivers, and flooded savanna.

Another animal that you should be careful of when you’re in the Amazon forest and near the river. You must be vigilant with the places you visit to prevent any injury that you could get from this creature.

What’s more frightening is that the black caiman does not select when it comes to attacks, especially when they feel like they’re being attacked or threatened. Their attacks are deadly because of their sharp teeth and strength.

5. Electric Eel

Another dangerous animal in the Amazon river is the electric eel. These are docked creatures that could deliver high electricity shock and leave you paralyzed.

Electric eels are not eels. However, they belong to the knife fish family, making it very dangerous. These species are found in the Amazon river and can stun prey and defend against predators.

The truth is that attacks on humans by eels are rare. Yet the shocks from the electric eels could result in stunning jolts and various shocks that cause drowning to humans or could lead to heart failure.

6. Poison Dart Frog

Next up is the Poison Dart Frogs. These deadly creatures are found in rivers, lakes, marshes, swamps, and streams. These frogs are the most poisonous species of the frog family. It is estimated to contain enough venom to kill ten adult humans.

Don’t be fooled by these frogs’ brilliant skin colour. It serves as a warning to their predators. And take note; they become more dangerous if any predator tries to eat the dart frog. It’s because their skin would cause swelling, which is highly dangerous.

And did you know that poison dart frogs gain poison from their diet like centipedes, ants, and termites? Don’t be too complacent, and always be careful, as they are not “just frogs”.

7. Bull Shark

Of course, bull sharks are among the most dangerous sharks in the world. It is famous for it’s one of the frequent attackers of humans. They are not just found in the ocean; they are found far down the Amazon river. They can live in both freshwater and saltwater rivers.

8. Four-line Pim Catfish

This is not just an ordinary fish in the ocean. The Four-line Pim Catfish is one of the most harmful animals in the world that can be found in the Amazon river basins.

Humans should be careful with these Catfish as there are different cases of poisonous lesions that fishermen have experienced.

9. Potamotrygon Stingray

Though stingrays can be friendly, this specie can be harmful to humans. The Potamotrygon Stingray is a freshwater fish that may live in all South American countries.

But did you know the Potamotrygon Stingray is the greatest diversity of species in the Amazon basin? They are sometimes more feared than electric eels and piranhas because of their poisonous sting.

10. Vampire Fish

Lastly, the Vampire fish is famous and feared because they could lodge in the genital or even the excretory orifices of the prey. And why do they do this? They feed on their blood, making it one of the most dangerous Amazon river animals.

You can find it mostly in the strong currents of the Amazon river and the lagoons. They are too small, so it’s hard to see them.
