Lack of Urbanization

Throughout the 1700s and 1800s, the industrial revolution raced through Europe, but agriculture remained the backbone of the Ottoman economy. The Empire needed factories and mills to compete with Great Britain, France, and even Russia. 

Because of this, the Empire’s economy grew slowly, and any agricultural surplus it produced was used to repay its debts to European creditors. As World War I broke out, the Ottoman Empire lacked the industrial might to create the heavy weapons, gunpowder, iron, and steel required to construct railways to contribute to the war effort.

Lack of Enough Education

The lack of educated individuals would have contributed to the shocking defeat of the Ottoman Empire. The Empire fell behind its European rivals in literacy despite attempts to advance education in the 1800s, and by 1914, it is believed that just 5–10% of its populace could read.

Tzar Nicholas II and Sergei Sazanov, his foreign minister, rejected attempts to rescue Russia by negotiating a separate peace with the Empire.

Lack of Judgment leads to the wrong side

The inadequacies in so many domains have also considerably influenced the Ottoman Empire’s judgments. As a result, they supported Germany during World War I, which ultimately led to their defeat. The Ottoman Empire made a terrible decision by secretly signing a deal with Germany before the conflict. 

The Empire’s army engaged in a terrible, violent struggle on the Gallipoli peninsula in the following conflict to defend Constantinople from Allied invasion troops in 1915 and 1916. In the end, the Empire lost some 500,000 men, most of whom died of sickness, while another 3.8 million were injured or became ill. 

In October 1918, the Empire and Great Britain reached an armistice that ended the war. The postwar treaties dissolved the Empire, and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk declared the Republic of Turkey the next year after dissolving the sultanate in 1922.
