1. World War II
The Second World War was a historic global war that lasted between 1939 to 1945. This involved almost all countries, and the war pitted the Axis power and military allies in the deadliest war in history.
These two allies engaged for a total of nearly about six years with consequences in terms of a number of death and destruction.
World War II was responsible for more than 70 million deaths, of which 20 million were military personnel and 50 million were believed to be civilians.
It was also known for its genocidal campaign against the Jewish people. There was also an estimated 100 million military personnel from about 30 countries.
2. Lushan Rebellion
This Rebellion refers to the massive war against the Tang Dynasty of China. It happened between December 755 A.D. and 736 A.D.
The war lasted about eight years, and the Rebellion was the direct result of General An Lushan, who declared himself emperor of Northern China in defiance of the Tang Dynasty.
And while it’s challenging to accurately report the death toll, the census reports that were taken in years following the war indicate that around 36 million people were killed.
3. Second Sino-Japanese War
This Japanese War was because of the conflict between China and Japan that happened between July 1937 to September 1945.
It’s a war that is considered one of the most devastating wars in history. It was bloody, as it conflicted the human history when Japanese forces pillaged, raped, and killed a lot of Chinese military staffs and civilians in their goal of victory.
The war was believed to start with the incident on Marco Polo Bridge and later escalated to a war that killed 25 million civilians and more than 4 million Japanese and Chinese military deaths.

4. Qing Conquest of the Ming Dynasty
The Qing Conquest was believed to be one of the most devastating wars in history. It was also known as the “Ming-Qing Transition” or the “Manchu Conquest of China” and was referred to as decades of the long war between the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
The transition was peaceful, even if the Rebellion lasted more than 60 years. And did you know that what started as a small rebellion in China resulted in one of the country’s deadly conflicts? Yes, you heard that right. It ended up killing about 25 million people.
5. Taiping Rebellion
Yet another Civil War in the country of China, the Taiping Rebellion, was one of the most devastating wars in history. It took place in China for 14 years, between 1850 to 1864.
The war involved the Qing government and the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a Christian millenarian movement. Led by Hong Xiuquan, the Taiping forces waged a political, nationalist, and religious war against the Qing Dynasty.
It aimed to convert the Chinese people to Christianity and topple the Qing government in the process. And based in modern-day Nanjing, the Taiping rebels managed to control portions of South China.
There was no exact number of casualties, but most estimations of this Rebellion have an estimate of 20-30 million falling under the control at the height of their power.
6. World War 1
Known as the “Great War,” the First World War involved the central powers and allies that originated in Europe in 1914. The WWI lasted for 4 years and resulted in the mobilization of almost 70 million military personnel.
It was when the European continent was engulfed by conflict in almost every corner of the map. It was in 1918 when the fighting ceased, and Europe faced devastation on the scale of never-before-seen history.
As the world experienced widespread social, political, economic, and cultural changes in this war, about 18 million lost their lives; 11 million were reported to be military personnel, and about 7 million were the civilians.
7. The Dungan Revolt
This war was fought between the Chinese ethnic group and the Huis, or Chinese Muslims. It’s about the religious conflict that began when the Hui Muslims rioted in China, where 20 million lost their lives.
The riot responded to the religious issues and racial discrimination perpetuated by Qing Dynasty. And because of the riot, the Qing government retaliated the speed, devastating reprisals, and even massacres against the Hui Muslims across Western China.
As the conflict got worse, the Hui Rebels were outgunned and outmatched, and it was when the Qing government enacted a war against the rebels and Muslim civilians.
8. The Russian Civil War
Known as the multi-party war between 1917 and 1922, the Russian Civil War is one of the most devastating wars in history. It involved the communists or the Red Army and the nationalists or the White Army, of which the war claimed more than 9 million lives of people, of which 8 million were civilians.
Lasting for about 6 years, this bloody Civil War of Russia against Russian erupted in the country. Despite the losses on all aspects of the conflict, the end of the hostilities proved short-lived. Yet, the victorious communist regime ushered the era immediately and repression of the decades followed.
