Most Dangerous Volcanos in the World List

Volcanoes can be incredible, yet they can be dangerous as they usually pose a danger to the people nearby. That’s why if there is an active volcano in a certain area or province, people are warned to evacuate the place as soon as possible.

Presently, there are about 1,500 possibly active volcanoes worldwide. Of these, around a third have already erupted – causing ash, smoke, or lava to burst into the surrounding cities and towns and from the surface.

So, what are the most dangerous and biggest volcanoes? What threats do they pose to us or the environment? In this video, we have compiled a list of the biggest and most dangerous volcanos in the World.

Take note, and this list is in no particular order – we just want to help you determine these volcanoes and to raise awareness to be more careful and never be so complacent. So, without further delay, let’s get started.

1.      Mount St. Helens, Washington

Despite its most recent outbreak in 2008, Mount St. Helens became known to many because of its eruption in 1980. It was when a sequence of explosions caused earthquake for months and even the greatest landslide ever recorded.

The ash and debris were recorded in 11 states in America and 2 Canadian provinces. Mount St. Helens remains active, as the top of the volcano is covered with a lava dome and large glacier.

2.      Iwo Jima, Japan

The Iwo Jima islands are just about 20 meters higher than what it was in 1945. This is mainly because of the growing magma chamber beneath. It’s the beach where American forces landed and now about 17 meters above the ocean’s surface.

And did you know that the island has been pushed up for about 1 meter every four years for the last hundred years? It’s just a matter of time before the entire island explodes.

Even if only a few people live on Iwo Jima, a tremendous eruption could cause a tsunami. It could destroy coastal China, Southern Japan, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, making it one of the most dangerous volcanos in the world.

3.      Vesuvius, Italy

Vesuvius should be in the world’s top 5 most dangerous volcanos. Why it’s dangerous? Well, it’s actually because of its numerous explosive eruptions. Also, the city of Naples is crawling up the flanks slowly.

Vesuvius volcano has been quiet for quite some time since the year 1944. People may be so complacent, as many don’t remember its last eruption. But remember, it’s never a good place to be when there are 6 million people that the explosive eruption might impact.

4.      Mayon Volcano, Philippines

Can you imagine how this active volcano has ever documented more than 30 eruptions since the 17th century? It had one eruption in 1993 that caused about 79 casualties. There have been about 5 eruptions alone since 2000, and each caused thousands of nearby villagers to leave their homes.

Mount Mayon’s shape has been called ‘the world’s most perfect cone.’ After typhoon Durian that hit Philippines 2006, its cone shape caused devastating floods and mudslides at the mountain’s foot. This killed more than 1,000 people.

5.      Popocateptl, Mexico

This volcano from Mexico recently became active once again in 1994. It has frequently been erupting. And because of the emitted heat, the last glacier melted in 2001. It’s especially dangerous because of the huge populace about 70 kilometers away – a total of 20 million people in Mexico.

6.      Mount Agung, Bali

Mount Agung’s eruption in 1963 caused having one of the most damaging natural disasters in the history of the region. It killed more than 1,500 people. Recently, the volcano erupted from 2017 to 2019. In 2017, the area experienced about 844 earthquakes due to the activity, and about 300-400 that happened in just one day alone.

With that, around 122,500 people evacuated their homes, and the activity remained on and off until May 2019, when the explosion spilled rocks and lava for more than 3km.

7.      Cotopaxi, Ecuador

Among the world’s tallest volcanoes, the Cotopaxi is among Ecuador’s most active volcanoes, with over 50 eruptions since the 16th century. It’s considered one of the most dangerous volcanos in the world because of elements like frequent eruptions, eruptive patterns, and people potentially exposed to threats. The most recent one happened in 1904, yet there was an almost eruption in 2005.

8.      Redoubt Volcano, Alaska

Among Alaska’s biggest and most dangerous volcanos, the Redoubt Volcano stands at the mammoth for about 10,000 ft above the sea level. It was between the years 1989 to 1990 when the eruption caused an interruption in air traffic, which made it among the most expensive volcanic eruptions in US history.

Even if the redoubt is covered with glacier, many experts warned that it could be hot lava and gases caused by eruption might cause debris and water to fall on the mountainside and near the Drift River to flood.

9.      Mount Fuji, Japan

One of Japan’s “Three Holy Mountains,” Mount Fuji has recently been the most dormant since 1707. However, scientists still consider it active because the earthquake in 2011 could have caused the eruption.

The possible eruption caused huge amounts of damage because of how close or near it was to Tokyo. It remains to be among the most dangerous mountains because of the damage that the large eruption would cost.

10.  Krakatoa, Indonesia

This could be quite an active volcano that wiped out large parts of the archipelago of Krakatoa in 1883. It released about 13,000 times the energy of an atomic bomb that Hiroshima had ever had. In fact, in the 1920s, the eruption created the Anak Krakatau Island. It grew each year by about 7 meters. The situation worsened in 1994 as it progressed to an even more serious eruptive phase in 2007.

Wrapping Up

With so many people losing their lives due to volcanic eruptions, it’s no longer worth risking to be near the biggest and most dangerous volcanos in the world like the ten volcanoes mentioned. Always remember that even though these volcano eruptions are never part of the trend, experts say that it could be very dangerous to be near them, and we should avoid them at all costs.
