How Was Electricity Discovered?

To imagine modern life without electricity is impossible, as it powers everything from the lights in our homes to the computers we use in our workplace. However, power was not something that people had always had access to.

The concept of electricity was a strange and elusive force that, for most of human history, people have a vague understanding of.

Scientists didn’t have the capabilities to fully comprehend the ideas surrounding electricity and use its benefits to make life easier until the late 18th century. Today, the history of how electricity was discovered, including the power discovery timeline, will be examined.

So, how was electricity discovered? Here’s what you need to know!

What do You need to Know about Electricity?

To know more about how was electricity discovered, here’s what you need to know.

During the Ancient Period

Between 600 BCE to 1600 CE, many pioneering discoveries about electricity were initiated. The first findings were regarding Thales of Miletus, who discovered static electricity through rubbing fur on amber, a fossilized tree resin.

Ancient Greeks also discovered the electric shocks emitted by the species Torpedo nobiliana (which is also known as the electric fish). By the 16th century, William Gilbert made pioneering findings to the ideas of magnetism and electricity, and he was credited for coining the word “electricity.” Discoveries from the ancient period were the foundation for later studies about electricity.

During the Enlightenment Age

Thanks to countless groundbreaking discoveries by some of history’s greatest scientists, the study of electricity experienced an explosion of interest during the age of enlightenment. One of the significant figures from this era is America’s founding father, Benjamin Franklin, who is famous for his kite experiment that leads to the knowledge that lightning is an electric discharge.

Another important person from this age is Alessandro Volta, who made the first electric battery that allowed an electric current to have a constant flow for the first time in history. Charles-Augustin de Coulomb made an important discovery that led to the advancement of electricity.

He enhanced the theory between electrically charged particles and electrostatic force, now called Coulomb’s law. This discovery created many electrical devices we use today, like the telegraph and electric motor, and it also improved our knowledge about the basic principles of electricity.

During the 20th Century to the Present

By far, the 20th and 21st centuries have the most impressive advancements ever made in the field of electricity. The invention of the transistor, developed by researchers at Bell Labs in the 1940s, allowed the development of smaller, more efficient, and more reliable than ever before. The breakthrough of the transistor paved the way for the modern computers we now have.

The development of nuclear power is another significant discovery of electricity during the 20th century. From the 1950s to the 1960s, scientists and engineers invented nuclear reactors, in which the heat produced emits electricity. Despite safety and waste disposal issues, nuclear power remains a significant energy source worldwide.

More sustainable nuclear power, such as solar panels and wind turbines, is now being utilized to produce electricity cleaner than traditional methods. To help balance the fluctuations in power supply that comes with using renewable sources, energy storage technologies like batteries are being developed.

One of the most promising advancements in the field of electricity is the rise of electric cars. The development of battery technology and electric motors made electrically powered cars possible, which are thought to be greener and more sustainable than gasoline-powered ones.

The only cons of this new technology are that it is still relatively new and has issues involving the limited range and high cost. Nevertheless, electric cars are gradually gaining popularity and are expected to replace traditional transportation shortly.

Other Details

The field of electricity has also made advancements in using things more effectively and efficiently. Smart grids, which are used to monitor and manage current flow, are being developed to make the electrical grid more reliable.

Additionally, scientists and researchers are using electricity to aid in the medicine area, where it can be used as a nerve cell stimulator and treat diseases such as Parkinson’s. Electricity has gradually played a significant role in the present, from Ancient Greece discovering static electricity to the development of electric cars and smart grids.

Frequently Asked Questions

Let us answer some of the most common questions from curious minds.

  • Who discovered electricity?

There is no specific person who discovered electricity. Rather, it was the centuries-long product of many inventors and scientists who significantly contributed to what we now know about electricity. But, most people have credited Benjamin Franklin with one of the greatest scientific discoveries of electricity.

  • How was electricity discovered?

The discovery of electricity is a continuous search that took several periods. We can trace the early experiments with static electricity back to the ancient Greeks and to the 18th-century scientists who study electrical charges regarding the invention of the Leyden jar. During the 19th century, electromagnetism paved the way for the invention of electrical devices such as electric motors and generators.

  • What are the practical applications of electricity?

Almost all aspects of our lives today include electricity. Practical applications of electricity in the modern world include lighting, ventilating systems, media, entertainment, and medicinal technology. The advancement of renewable energy sources such as solar energy and biomass also aids in reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, lessening our contributions to climate change.
