Useful Tips on How to Stop Wasting Time on Your Phone

If you spend too much of your time facing your phone and doing nothing, check out these tips to make your smartphone work. That way, you will prevent using your phone, which demands your attention.

Tip 1: Keep Yourself Busy

You have to engage yourself in things that will make you busy. Do activities like gardening, reading books, watching series, doing household chores, and everything! Perhaps this is the most basic step to prevent you from using your phone.

That way, you will forget your phone and only use it for emergency and work purposes. Once you get used to being busy, you will only touch your phone when you only need it.

Tip 2: Turn Off Push Notifications

Push notifications can somethings be irritating and disturbing. You don’t have to be interrupted by everything, such as every “LIKE” notification on your Instagram posts, a message from an online store, or even podcasts that released a new episode.

It’s just very easy to cut down distractions and one way of disciplining yourself. So, turn off push notifications to any apps you are using. Leave only those important ones like emails, messages, calendars, and utility apps. Better yet, you can just turn on the “Do not Disturb Mode.”

Tip 3: Put Your Phone Down

Seriously, you just have to walk away especially if you have a hard time breaking the habit of getting bothered to every alert and beep. You only need to put down your phone once in a while. You do not have to keep using your phone for work or school. You may choose to disengage yourself when you have to do other important matters.

You may ask a child to hide it if it’s still hard. That way, you will not be stressed about what you are missing. Because, if you know how to handle your attention, you can have your free time and it would make you feel so good.

Tip 4: Turn Your Phone into Grayscale

One of the best ways to curb the time spent on your smartphone is to make the screen less desirable. It is recommended to switch the phone to grayscale and remove the so-called “shiny rewards” that the colorful icons will give you every time you unlock.

Later you will see how this trick could effectively keep yourself off apps like Instagram and Facebook.

Tip 5: Delete Apps (Even the Ones You Often Use)

Don’t be scared to delete and clean your apps. And it’s not just the apps that you are not using. It also includes the apps that caused you distractions – the ones you spend most of your time with.

Remove accessibility to the apps, as it’s a sure way to stop stealing your attention, time, and mental clarity. It’s going to be uncomfortable and feel like you’re missing out on something, but the truth is, it will help you.

Tip 6: Fix Your Living Place

Another way to spend lesser time on your phone is by fixing things at home. This could be anything from doing chores like laundry, doing the dishes, cleaning, and redecorating.

You are enhancing the vibes at home by simply fixing or building things. Not only will the living space be improved, but it could also give you a sense of accomplishment and pride. Best of all, there will only be lesser screen time.

Tip 7:  Connect with Family and Friends

Because of smartphones, do you realize that we no longer mingle with our families and loved ones? Ever noticed that every time you gather with them, you spend most of your time scrolling on your phone?

Well, it’s about time to mingle back with them, other than connecting through smartphones. Spending more time with them in real life is the best feeling. Nothing beats real connections to humans.

While digital interactions are shallow and quick, real-life interactions are more meaningful and special.

Tip 8: Fully on, Fully Off Method

Most of us were never fully ‘on’ or fully ‘off.’ When we are supposed to be working, or perhaps be ‘ON’, we tend to procrastinate and waste most of our time on our phones. We get distracted by social media, private messages, or even news websites.

That being said, it leads us to slow progress and low productivity. The limitations between relaxation and work have already disappeared. But, some people were never fully relaxed when they had to, especially with the rise of technology.

With that, learn to regulate the on or off mode in yourself. When you are ‘ON’, you can just put your phone away and focus more on your work. And when you’re ‘OFF’, just relax and let go of work.

Tip 9: Use a Smart Speaker

One of the best things about having smart speakers is that they can help you live a screen-free life. You can turn on the music without having your phone near you when you have it.

You may even try answering calls via voice. You can use a smart speaker for many things, especially keeping your phone out of your hands for long periods.

Tip 10: Put It Away When You Sleep

Finally, don’t let your phone be the last thing you see at night and the first thing you see in the morning. If you sleep, try putting your phone away from you.

Think of it like your sleep when smartphones don’t exist yet because there’s a big chance you keep checking your phone when you wake up. You cannot get enough sleep when your attention is on your phone.
